Reform Agenda In Kenya

Focus: Engendered Reform Processes

These include: constitutional reforms, transitional justice, judicial reforms, electoral reforms, police reforms and land reforms. According to Agenda 4 of the National Accord, there is need to address injustices and inequalities resulting from the past. that largely led to the post election violence in 2007/2008 Such issues pertain to Constitutional Reforms whereby the need for a new constitution propelled the proposed constitution document to be created and the just-concluded referendum that saw the passing of the New Constitution which is keen to address the issues of women in addition to ensuring their participation in political processes and otherwise. Institutional Reforms focusing on the Police and the Judiciary are part of the agenda. Looking towards the 2012 elections and the desired future comprehensive electoral systems in Kenya, Electoral Reforms remain part of our key reform agenda.

Projects:

The Land Reforms and Decentralization Project

WiLDAF Kenya in joint collaboration with the G-10 Coalition, is currently working on a Land Reforms and Decentralization Project.

The land reforms will assist a great deal in resolving land issues that have continued to haunt many Kenyans, especially the marginalized, the vulnerable and dispossessed groups in our society. Decentralization will allow for a devolved, open and transparent government.

Women and the New Constitution

WiLDAF Kenya is currently working on the implementation of the New Constitution as a post-referendum strategy.

This project is aimed at continuing to educate the women on its contents and ensuring that the stipulated clauses are implemented especially in reference to those that affect women and their political, economic and social rights in particular. We are also keen on the new bills and are monitoring the legislative process to ensure engendering of the bills.

Engendered Police and Judicial Reforms

With recommendations from the National Task Force on Police and Judicial Reforms, WiLDAF Kenya is on the forefront to ensure implementation of engendered Police and Judicial reforms that will ensure that the human rights and dignity of arrested persons and otherwise are upheld. Implementing judicial reforms will promote access to justice and this is fundamental for the women and children especially. New provisions in the new constitution of Kenya provide for these reforms and this is an opportunity for WiLDAF Kenya to actively engage in the process.
